If You Love Your Cat, Don’t Declaw Them!!

Happy Kitty

When you hear what the effects are, you will think twice about declawing yourcat.  This post is what you would hear if you did this.  Please read before making your decision!!

Here is a list (straight from the magazine article in Modern Cat ) of problems that could happen to your cat or kitten when they are declawed:

  1. It is an amputation; it is not merely the removal of the claws.  To declaw a cat, the veterinarian cuts off the last knuckles of a cats paw-cutting through bones, tendons, and nerves.  In a person, it is equivalent to amputating each finger or toe at the last joint.
  2. Declaw surgery can be extremely painful procedure with associated health risks and complications such as infection.
  3. Declaw surgery can produce permanent lameness, pain, or arthritis.
  4. Declawing is the same mutilating procedure for house cats or big cats.

In the magazine they speak about a movie The Paw Project by veterinarian Jennifer Conrad.  She also started a movement called pawproject.org.  If you want to join the campaign just go to that site.

The movie is to open your eyes and tell and show people the crippling and painful effects of feline declawing.  They want to abolish this all together and use other methods .  The vet can clip their nails, there are nail covers if they are scratching furniture, and getting a scratching post will work.  Also a cool trick I learned, putdouble sided tape on the areas you do not want to scratch.  They do not like sticky things.

Please read up on this and do a thorough investigation into what will be happening with your cat.  There are other options out there.  You can also join the movement by going to pawproject.org.

Has you done this and had complications?   Have you decided that that route was no good?  Please let me hear your stories about your cats…. It doesn’t necessarily have to be about declawing….
