Why You Need the One Word Life Challenge

“Moooommm, where’s my (Insert whatever it is the kids are looking for)?”

“Honey, have you seen my (insert whatever hubby is looking for this morning)?”

” How’s that project coming? The deadlines in(insert a ridiculous time frame).”

Hey, could you (insert whatever someone needs you to do today that shouldn’t be your responsibility)?”

It’s enough to make a girl come unglued!!

Coming unglued

So many times in life things feel like they’re careening out of control.  Most days, I like to believe I do okay, others, well, not so much. It’s funny how we can fool some of the people some of the time, but we can never fully fool ourselves, can we?

Our lives are busy. How will we get to everything? We rush around flitting from one thing to the next, rush around delivering our children to all of their activities, rush to meet this deadline, and cook dinner, and do the laundry, and, and ,and… until, finally, at the end of the day, we drop into our beds purely exhausted, but sleep eludes us as our brain kicks in and says,

“Hey! Let’s think about all the things we didn’t get done today AND about all the things we have to get done tomorrow, Okay?”

Um, no, let’s not, okay?

But, no matter how we try to avoid all of those thoughts, they rattle around in our heads and our sleep is fitful at best. Then, we try to wake up and do it all over again.

Searching for Something

I’m searching for something…. Something that will make the days not feel so crazy, not feel as if I’m a hamster on one of those little spinning wheels (although, that would be a good way to fit exercise into my daily life 😉 )

Are you searching for something that will make your life different? Something that will bring you a better, different life? I can completely relate! I understand how crazy life can feel and how overwhelmed you feel.

Well, God works in mysterious ways my friend and as I sat one evening perusing, what I really mean is wasting time on Facebook, I noticed a post a friend of mine wrote. It really got my think tank started!

In that post, my friend laid down a challenge. He challenged me to not make a New Year Resolution, but to instead, find ONE word I could focus on all year. One word…..hmmm.
I wanted to know if there was actually a challenge for this and there was. WOW! There’s an entire community!! You can read all about here. #myoneword
Now, that’s something to keep me awake that is gonna do me some good!
One word shouldn’t be too difficult, should it?
I’ve prayed. I’ve searched. I’ve thought and I finally know what word I’m going to focus on this year.
peace. it does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work
PIN THIS!! You’re gonna want to remember it

 Did you catch that?

Peace isn’t the lack of noise or trouble or hard work.
Good ol’ Miriam Webster defines peace as: “a state of tranquility or quiet”
Can you imagine? A life that still has noise, troubles, and hard work but that is tranquil or quiet.
Sounds impossible, doesn’t it? With all we do, the kids helping out and putting things away in all sorts of crazy ways. I mean I just found a sock in my dishtowel drawer for heaven’s sake! ~ Peace in the midst of all that, really?

Seek and You Will Find

Well, I wanted to find out if there could be peace among the noise, trouble and hard work!
I wanted peace to be my word but I knew I was going to need some help. Some things you just can’t do on your own right? Right!
I knew peace was what I was seeking and could apply to many areas of my life. My home life, married life, work life, mom life, friend life, you name it, I think peace can make a difference.
So I started searching.
Scripture was my first stop.
For some that may sound strange, but I’m a firm believer that God’s word is alive and fully applies to my life.
I wanted, no, needed scripture that would help me focus whenever I wasn’t feeling peace.
Something I could fall into for focusing my attention back to having peace.

I’ve been studying the book of John using this really cool online study over at She Reads Truth, so that was the first place I went as my search began.

It always amazes me (it shouldn’t, but it does) how God works. As I read, I came across the perfect scripture for my word of the year.

Peace I leave you; my peace I give you.
Tweet: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. that juicy, life-changing scripture

Isn’t that amazing!? THE.Perfect.Scripture.

Next Step

Once I found my “bring-me- back” scripture I needed to get it in front of me so I could memorize it. I mean I’m not going to be able to stop in the middle of chaos and say, “hold on a minute! I need to pull my Bible out so I can repeat my scripture because I’m feeling a little crazy right now!”
No, that sounds crazier than the actual stuff that makes me lose my peace. Not that there’s anything wrong with pulling your Bible out. It’s just sometimes there isn’t time for that.
I wanted to focus on memorizing this scripture so when my peace was feeling threatened or when I thought I was rocking on the edge of losing it, I could repeat it and step away from the ledge of crazy.
What I did do was write it down….EVERYWHERE
  • I made it my phone’s lock screen photo
  • I hung post-it notes on my bathroom mirrors
  • I wrote it on the family calendar
  • I stuck post-it notes on my dashboard
  • I sent a text to myself
  • I hung it on the inside of my cabinet doors
  • I posted it on my fridge with a big magnet

When I say everywhere, I mean everywhere!

I can now say John 14:27 from memory and it has saved my butt from losing it many a time!
Peace is found only within, and unless one finds it there, one will never find it at all. Peace lies not in the external world. It lies within one’s own soul. —RALPH W. TRINE
Whenever I feel myself beginning to worry about whatever it is my brain decides to transfix on on any given day or when I feel myself getting sucked into the crazy pond, I just start repeating John 14:27 over and over in my head (especially the last part, do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid!)
Peace is the result of retraining your mind
There are so many reasons why you need to do this! The 3 biggies for me, were:

1.To create a stronger relationship with Christ. Without a personal relationship with Christ, our lives can careen out of control. He doesn’t want anything but our entire heart! He wants to be involved in every.single. thing. Whether that’s vacuuming, doing the dishes, taking our kids to all the activities, or simply resting. Placing our main focus on this relationship can make all others run more smoothly

2. To Prioritize all the Madness. There’s always more for us to do than we can possibly get done. Loss of balance brings about a lack of understanding what things are a must and what things we can let slide for awhile. Having a method, in this case, a one-word focus, that keeps our eyes one the most important relationships, tasks, and other things at hand helps us learn to prioritize.
3. To bring life into balance. There’s nothing worse than having your life be so out of balance that it affects you in very strange ways, like not knowing where you put things or putting the dish rag in the fridge (yep, did that ;0 ) how to accomplish all the things you need to get done.
Soooo, I’m Challenging You!
I don’t know about you, but I don’t usually turn down a good challenge.

Your Turn

Today, start thinking about ONE WORD you want to focus on this year.

A word that’s going to give your life a new direction.

What we achieve inwardly will change outer reality. —OTTO RANK

What is YOUR WORD for 2017?

  1. Figure out what it is you need in your life, pray about it, journal about it, talk with friends and family, do whatever it takes, then, pick one word that represents the things you most need or want in your life
  2. Find YOUR bring-you-back from insanity scripture
  3. Post YOUR scripture everywhere
  4. Memorize it
  5. USE IT

YOU’VE GOT THIS because GOD’S GOT YOU!!

Peace does not dwell in outward things, but within the soul; we may preserve it in the midst of the bitterest pain if our will remains firm and submissive. Peace in this life springs from acquiescence, not in an exemption from suffering. —FRANCIS FENELON

Certain thoughts are prayers. There are moments when whatever be the attitude of the body, the soul is on its knees. —VICTOR HUGO

  1. What a nice thing to do for yourself – to find one word to see you through the year. I’m really not sure if I would know what mine could be 🙂 But your post has got me thinking…Thank you!

  2. What a different world it would be if we could all find peace in our hearts. That background anxiety we all live with is so ‘normal’ now that it does take work to get rid of it and, as WaynecDyer says, learn to live with the world as it is and not how we think it should be. Great post Robyn.

      1. Yes – very well thanks – sorry I haven’t been been visiting much, I had a long period of looking after my parents 24/7 during a health crisis but am back to my own life for the time being. Still have lots of needs to see to but I do have more time now as I am back at home again. Hope you are well too.
