Summer of Fun – I Scream, You Scream, We’re Making No Churn Ice Cream!

Welcome back!! The boys have arrived for our second round of summer of fun and today we’re making ice cream.

I remember making ice cream with my gramma or was it with mama, either way I remember. We used one of those old fashioned ice cream makers. The one that used rock salt and then you turned and turned and turned. It was always so delish, but the wait was absolute torture for us girls.

Wonder whatever happened to that old thing? Huh, I’ve not thought about it in quite some time.

I have wanted an ice cream maker for a looong time but still don’t have one. 😯 Sad I know.

I bet you’ll never imagine what I did to find an ice cream recipe that didn’t require an ice cream maker. YEP! I hopped on over to our dear friend Pinterest. You’re shocked, I can tell. 😉

Now the BIG QUESTION becomes, will this be a Pinterest rock star experience or an epic fail?

Time will tell. Actually, I’m being literal here. We will know one way or another somewhere between 5-7 hours from now. It could be less of a wait, but the 3-4 hour freeze time yields a soft serve ice cream and well, I’m just not a fan.

Today’s Pinterest experiment comes from Best Recipe Box and you can find the recipe HERE for the ice cream we’re making today.

It was actually very easy, I mean after all it’s only 3 ingredients for crying out loud. However, I’ve had several easy Pinterest projects and well, lets just say they didn’t turn out quite the way I expected.

Here’s the scoop (hahaha I made a funny and didn’t even mean too!! 😉 )

Step One: Put some big ol’ strawberries in a bowl (if you read the recipe you’ll see you can use frozen berries too)

IceCreamStep1

Step Two: Mash those babies all up (this is definitely an action shot!! Look at him go!!)

IceCreamStep2

Step Three: Set those beautiful mushy things aside.

IceCreamStep3

Step four: Put 2 cups of heavy whipping cream in a separate mixing bowl (make sure the cream is COLD, COLD, COLD)

IceCreamStep4

Step Five: Pour one 14 ounce can of Sweetened condensed milk in with the heavy cream (no, evaporated milk is NOT the same thing)

IceCreamStep5

Step Six: Mix those two ingredients together with an electric mixer on high until stiff peaks form (start slow though or you may be wearing cream and condensed milk)

IceCreamStep6

Step Seven: Gently fold in your mashed up strawberries (oops, must’ve been really focused on the task at hand because I forgot to take a photo of this step…. *blush*)

SideBar: We did add 1 drop of red food coloring just to give it that nice strawberry pink look

Step Eight: Pour it all into a freezer safe container, cover, and freeze 4-5 hours

IceCreamStep8

There you have it – Ice Cream making at it’s finest!! I do hope it turns out!! Now I just hope I can wait 5 hours!!! Ahhhhhhh, I LOVE ICE CREAM!!!!

UPDATE: It’s been about 5 hours since we put the ice cream in the freezer, so I went to check on it. I open the freezer door, pull the pan out, set it on the counter top, pull the foil away, and POW!! stick my finger right smack into the ice cream (hahahahahahahaha!!!)

UM, apparently it’s not quite ready

IceCreamStep9

UPDATE: our ice cream has now been in the freezer overnight! OH. MY. GOODNESS. It is pretty!! It rolls when you scoop it, just like at the ice cream parlor and it TASTES FABULOUS!!

I’m calling this one a Pinterest WIN!!! Thanks BEST RECIPE BOX!!

IceCreamYUM

Well this wraps up another Pinterest attempt and thankfully it was a success. We had a great time making it and an even better time eating it!!!

♥ See you tomorrow ♥

  1. Looks and sounds delicious! I have some memory of my Canadian life when we used to make brown bread ice cream – yes I know, sounds weird but I am sure we did. Just off to Google that…

  2. Sounds yummy!

I, too, remember as a kid having to take my turn cranking the ice cream freezer outside. It seemed like it took at least 12 hours, but in reality I’m sure it was less than ONE hour. Once we “got all fancy and uptown,” we bought an electric ice cream freezer.

We had three big peach trees in the back yard in South Texas, so that was my parents preferred flavor. Unfortunately, I’m not a fan of peaches, so we would also make a batch of vanilla ice cream for those of us who didn’t want peach.
