Summer – Where Does the Time Go?

Where does the time go? Ever utter that phrase before?

I know I do on a regular basis. It seems like my day starts and before I know it, BAM, it’s over.

I look at my kids and they’re so cute, cuddly, and young and BAM they’re almost grown or already grown and forging paths of their own.

I celebrate my birthday and I think, how did I get to be this age. It wasn’t that long ago I was young and full of piss and vinegar (to coin a phrase from my dad)

Where does the time go?

I just don’t know. So I’ve decided I’m going to find out. Now this type of post may not be for everyone ( I get that) but I think it’s going to be fun to keep a record of just how I’m spending my time so later when I’m asking myself, “where did the time go?”, I know exactly where it went, what I did, and how I got to where I am.

Perhaps I should mention, there are 1440 minutes in a 24 hour period. Most of us are not awake for a full 24 hour period (well at least not when we are older and well, I’m older now). I’ve decided to be generous and assume most of us are up somewhere between 14 and 18 hours a day, so that translates into 840 -1080 minutes a day we have to take care of everything we need to do, care of ourselves (which I stink at doing) and others, barring any mishaps, because those never happen (she says in her best sarcastic tone)

HOUSE

Let’s delve into Day 1

This morning started off with a bang. No alarm forcing me into facing the day, but awake at 5:44 AM none-the-less. You may be wondering why, ah but of course I’m going to tell you.

Hubby shot straight up on bed with a muttered sharp shout,

“CRAP!! My alarm didn’t go off!!”

As I lay there listening to him mutter under his breath about how he’s not going to get breakfast or lunch, I think, hmmm I know how I can make this a better start.

Here’s how it went down:

I am woman, hear me roar!! Hubby’s alarm malfunctioned and he got up very late. Grumping around about how he wasn’t gonna get breakfast or lunch!
Enter THE WIFE… (cue the superhero music)
Egg sandwiches for breakfast (it had to keep him going until lunch)
And BBQ chicken with okra for lunch (thanks to my sidekick Microwave)
All of this in under 20 minutes!!!
Rocked it!!!

Now that that is taken care of, on to the next thing. A bit of relaxation before I need to take the home instruction (tutor) materials back to the school. *ring, ring*

me: “hello”

Hubs: ” do you need this red bag that’s in the van”

Perhaps I should interrupt this conversation and let you all know, hubs took my van to work so I could take his truck in for an oil change. So, he’s calling me from my van on the way to his job which by the way is 45 minutes away.

me: ” are you kidding me? Crap! Yep, I need that bag. It has all of the home instruction stuff in it that I need to return to the school today”

hubs: ” well I’m already on the highway”

me: ” great! guess I’m getting dressed and heading out to come get it”

Call ends and I head upstairs to shower thinking to myself the whole time; ‘well isn’t this ironic.’ I spent all the way home from work yesterday reminding myself I needed to get the grocery bags out of the van and put them in the truck so I had them for grocery shopping the next day. Reminded myself so much about those bags I forgot I needed that silly little red bag too!

Long and short of it, I called my mom to ask if she wanted to ride along to pick up that silly little bag before I drop the truck off for the oil change, which by the way, she was picking me up from so I didn’t have to sit and wait for the truck to be finished. After all, who has time for that? 🙂

AWAY WE GO!!

Where does the time go?

5:44 AM – Well today it went to saving hubby’s morning by fixing breakfast and lunch for him

jump out of bed (5 minutes)

make breakfast and lunch (20 minutes) actually it was a little less but we’ll just round up, OK? Great!

sit down with a bit of OJ, kick my feet up and settle in for a little bit before I have to get moving (15 minutes)

phone call from hubs (5 minutes)

showering much earlier than anticipated and getting dressed (20 minutes – fast huh?)

go pick mom up, drive to get the bag I should’ve had the night before (120 minutes)

stop in the school to return books and turn in finals (25 minutes)

drop the truck off for an oil change (15 minutes)

stop and get some breakfast because we are starving (no not really but we were pretty hungry) (90 minutes)

Is anyone else getting tired?

to the grocery store, with list and calculator in hand so I stay within that ol’ budget (90 minutes) Why does it take so long to grocery shop? Eh that’s for another time perhaps

home to put at least the frozen and cold stuff away (45 minutes) maybe I’ll get lucky and hubs will put the rest away (he did…how lucky am I?)

*ring, ring* trucks ready!

go and get it (30 minutes)

drive to the job mom and I do together – cleaning a different school  (25 minutes)

clean the school and the gym (240 minutes)

Drive home (20 minutes)

12:10 AM- Fall in the door, kick off my shoes, kiss the hubs, throw in a load of laundry, do the dishes left in the sink (thank goodness he put the rest of the groceries away), grab a drink of something cold, grab the stuff left on the stairs, crawl up the stairs, shower and fall into bed!! (60 minutes)

Lay there running through my head what needs to be done tomorrow, spend some time talking with God and pray for sleep to come (40 minutes)

Just in case you’re on the more curious side like I am, that’s 865 minutes or 14 hours and 25 minutes!! JINKIES! No wonder I feel so drained at the end of each day. Is this how the whole summer is going to look?

Where did the time go? Today it went to a lot of things, none of which were too vitally important but which certainly kept me hopping, left me exhausted, and reminded me of just how many blessings are in my life.

I am blessed with:

a hubby, food I can feed my family, two cars, running water, a phone, a mom, a job, money to pay for oil changes and food, a place in which to keep said food, a second job, shoes for my feet, clothes to wear, dishes to use, kids who leave clutter, a bed to sleep in, and a roof over my head!

WOW! Looks like this may be a bit more than figuring out where the time goes!

Can’t wait till tomorrow!
