Thanksgiving.
It’s natural at this time of year to really focus on what we are thankful for.
I suppose I’m no different than most. I’m thinking about all the things I have to be thankful for. Things I try to be sure and thank God for letting him know how much they mean to me.
As I thought about all I have to be thankful for, and trust me there is a lot, I realized how easy it is to miss the small things that happen on a daily basis.
I find there are things I’m not very good at thinking about giving thanks for: waking up each day, forgiveness, second chances, third chances, as many chances I need, my abilities, safe travel to and from work every day, being able to drive 25 minutes each way to pick up my boys, a husband who stays even when I’m not very nice, love, laughter, food, shelter, clothing.
There are things I forget to be thankful for. The troubles in my life that grow me into a better person; Pain that stretches me to become the person God created me to be. Difficulties that test my faith and show me a better way.
Yes, trials are something to be thankful for.
Without the trials, how would we recognize the times of peace and good in our lives?
As I come to this day of thanks I’m learning to be thankful in ALL THINGS, not just thankful for the good things.
Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belongs to Christ Jesus to live. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)
What are some things you might be missing that you should be thankful for?
I am thankful for having four walls, a roof and a warm bed. Without those things, life must be a complete misery. I was just in a city where there are quite a few people sleeping rough – laying on the pavements in filthy sleeping bags in very cold weather. People all around, ignoring this horrific situation, too busy doing Christmas shopping to celebrate the birthday of a man who would not have ignored the homeless. Oh the irony.

My health. I always forget that it can leave so quickly, I need to take better care of myself, so I can keep my health for a lot longer.

I like the one you mentioned about your husband staying “even” when you are not very nice. That happens in our home, too. I appreciate the reminder to be thankful for ALL things, including difficult trials, because life has shown me that it truly is a these times that I grow the most.
