I Remember and Will Never Forget

This country has seen hardship and tragedy, gone through war and peace, flood and drought but 14 years ago, we went through something else.

Something we couldn’t define as it was happening.

Something that made no sense.

Something we couldn’t wrap our minds around.

Something that brought more questions than answers.

We experienced something that sent us blindly tumbling through denial, tears, anger, disbelief, resolution, and finally motivation.

14 years has passed since that horrific day in our history and still, video footage, books, documentaries, all move me to tears.

I Remember and Will Never Forget

I’m paying tribute here, today, to those who fought to survive and did, who fought to survive and didn’t. To those whose job took them into the depths of hell right on the surface of the earth. To those trapped and to those who escaped. To those who loved and lost, and to those who loved and found.

I recently read a book about the events of the Twin Towers and their fall:

102 Minutes: The Untold Story of the Fight to Survive Inside the Twin Towers

102minutes

It was an experience I will not forget. It allowed me, someone who had never seen the towers nor been to New York, to be a part of the lives of those inside. It was heart wrenching and eye opening all at the same time.

Recommend it? Yes, I would.

For me, it was about knowing more than what the media reported, more than what the papers allowed me to know. It made it personal. It made it real.

As a society we have become stone hearted to terrible things. Numb if you will because we see it every day on our local and national news broadcast, in magazines, on the front pages of the newspaper; Tragedy is on our phone’s news feed and on programs we choose to watch on TV.

We are often unmoved by tragedy simply because what floods us forces us to shut down from it, remove ourselves from it, self preservation in a sense.

The video I post here is lengthy. It is graphic in parts. It is in short, not easy to watch.

I’m not trying to put tragedy in your face once again. I am documenting a terrible human tragedy in hopes of never forgetting that it is up to me to

Remember and Never Forget To Make A Difference Everyday In Some Small Way

  1. On Sept 11, I reviewed a book by parents who lost their 11-year old in the plane that crashed into the Pentagon. How does one recover from such tragedy. I remember the horror and disbelief with which we watched footage of what happened that fateful day. I’m bookmarking your post, to watch the video later. Thanks for sharing, Robyn.

  2. I get the chills every time I watch any footage about the 9/11 attacks. I was a young girl back then unaware of what had happened and 14 years later, I ache for the innocent lives lost that day. Truly a tragic event.

  3. It’s a day I will never forget. My son was due on 9/11. Thankfully he was born early August 26th 2001. But I remember so clearly standing holding my beautiful new baby and sobbing watching the scenes on the TV. I was so convinced that someone was going to announce it was from a film or something. Such a terrible day. So many lives lost, but so many heroes were also there on that day too. x

    1. Oh Wendy, I’m so glad there was some joy, a new little one offering a bit of hope in the bleak face of tragedy! I often wonder if I would have been one of the strong who wanted to survive and help or if I would have simply resigned myself to a horrible death. I like to think my strong desire to help would have kicked in. I remember complete stunned disbelief as I stood there and watched it all unfold on my TV. Reading about it helped me gain some perspectives I hadn’t considered.
